Locksmith Help on Holidays and Weekends

Busy schedules, travel and parties make holidays prime time for lock problems. Here's how to prepare.

Holidays scramble routines. More people in and out of the house, more driving, more bags in more hands. That is exactly when keys get left behind.

Before you travel

  • Check that every exterior lock throws fully. A deadbolt you have to lean on is a deadbolt that might not be locked.
  • Give a spare to one neighbor, not a mat or a fake rock.
  • Put fresh batteries in keypad and smart locks.
  • Carry the spare car key separately from the main one.

With guests coming and going

Lending keys to visiting family is normal. Count them out and count them back. If one goes missing, don't just shrug; rekeying costs less than worrying about it.
